Shuga is the youngest Star Reader in history. In the anime, he is also Chagum's tutor. He is a kind and respectful young man with a sense of discretion and determination. Little is known about Shuga's personal history, though he mentions growing up in a small fishing village. Upon his introduction, he is 20 years old.[1]

Overview[]

When Chagum becomes the vessel for the Water Spirit's egg, the Second Queen approaches both Shuga and the magic weaver Torogai as to cause of his condition. Shuga, unable to determine the cause, consults the Master Star Reader, who believes that Chagum is possessed by a water demon that will cause a great drought. The Mikado reluctantly orders Chagum's assassination. In the first novel, where Shuga is not Chagum's tutor yet (he becomes so sometime before Guardian of the Dream), Shuga's own suspicions regarding what possessed Chagum along with the divinations of the Star Readers lead him to approach the Master Star Reader with the intent of independently researching the water demon's association with the drought sign and Chagum's death in secret. In the anime, Shuga is assigned to do so by the Master Star Reader, and also learns of the existence of the Hunters.

After Chagum has been returned to the palace, Shuga begins training in secret with Torogai, an act which would get him expelled from the palace if it were discovered.[2] He meets regularly with her in the attic above The Everything Shop, which is run by Tohya and Saya; later, he also receives information from a network of messengers, who deliver their missives to Toya's shop (for which Shuga pays him). He travels to Sangal with Chagum during Traveler of the Void, but is not allowed to accompany the prince during Traveler of the Blue Road. Shuga has an extreme loyalty to Chagum, however, and he charges Jin with protecting the prince from assassination during the voyage.

While Shuga is born a commoner, he is a prodigy and able to rise swiftly through the ranks of the Star Readers, ultimately being elected as the new Holy Sage upon Hibi Tonan's death in Guardian of Heaven and Earth - a rank that places him second only to the Mikado and the Imperial family in social rank. He never wished to be given this job, however, considering it too demanding and confining.

Shuga is a prudent, crafty, calculating young man, regarded as a genius by Hibi Tonan. He does not hesitate to meddle in the dirty side of politics when it suits him. For instance, he attempts to have Balsa killed following the birth of the egg of the Nyunga Ro Im, but is stopped by the Hunters; and when he realises that Tarsan has been cursed by a magic weaver, he doesn't act on that knowledge until ordered by Chagum, preferring to stay out of Sangalese political matters. He even considers siding with the Talsh if it will prevent the invasion of New Yogo by their armies. Chagum's safety, however, is his top priority.
