Seirei no Moribito

Seirei no Moribito (精霊の守り人) is a live-action adaptation of the Moribito series originally written by Nahoko Uehashi and adapted by Sumio Omori. Directed by Keiji Kataoka, the series began airing on NHK in Japan on March 2016.

The first season of the series consisted of four episodes, airing from March 19, 2016 to April 9, 2016. The series was subsequently renewed for two additional seasons, to air in 2017 and 2018 respectively, with an order of nine episodes each.

Overview[]

Balsa (Haruka Ayase) is 30-year old itinerant bodyguard from Kanbal. When she saves Imperial Prince Chagum after falling to a raging river, her life abruptly changes when she is hired to protect Chagum. She is forced to fend off hired assassins seeking to kill Chagum, who has become the host of the egg of the water spirit, which must be returned to its source in the sea.

In the second season, Balsa travels to Rota, where she rescues Asra and Chikisa (along with Tanda) and encounters a dangerous cult and insurrection amid Rota's southern clan lords. In the third season, Balsa is reunited with Chagum and helps him make an alliance between New Yogo, Rota and Kanbal to save New Yogo from invasion by the Talsh Empire.

Mon fails to smother Chagum. Chagum, Jin, Shuga and two sailors escape the wooden cage house. Chagum gets pierced by a harpoon and they all are captured by Hugo. Meanwhile, Balsa and Asra stay at Martha's shop, then depart back to Rota per Shihana's demand. Asra uses Talhamaya to kill wolves in order to save Balsa, then happily smiles, scaring Balsa (episode name is based on this event). Meanwhile, Rota king Yosam dies, and Ihan decides to keep that a secret for a while. Past relation between Ihan and Trisha is unveiled.

Balsa and Asra meet a Tal woman called Ianu, who offers them to join a Tal group on their way to the Rota ceremonial place. However Tal people betray Balsa and bring Asra right into the hands of Shihana, who actually plans to use Asra's power for prince Ihan's sake. Balsa, Sufar, Torogai and Tanda reunite. Meanwhile, Chagum befriends Sena, the pirate ship female captain. Soon they reach Old Yogo and enter the ruins of Torugaru's palace.

Chagum is brought to Talsh capital where he has an audience with Talsh prince Raul, who proposes a plan of New Yogo peaceful surrender under Chagum's rule when the Mikado is killed by a Talsh agent in the court. Chagum unwillingly agrees. He requests that the captured crew is freed, including Shuga, Jin and Mon, and boards a ship with them to return to New Yogo. Midway Chagum instructs Mon to report that he was killed and jumps off the ship swimming in order to secretly get to Rota.

Asra is brought to the Rota ceremonial place where she reunites with Chikisa. Ihan soon visits them, later informing Shihana that he does not like the idea of Asra becoming Sada Talhamaya. Shihana secretly informs Southern Feudals that king Yosam has died. During the Country Foundation ceremony they try to uproot Ihan. The tension increases when Ianu, according to Shihana's plan, appears at the ceremony, and many people demand Ianu's execution. Here Asra finally decides to become Sada Talhamaya but she is stopped by Balsa and Chikisa at the last moment. The commotion is stopped, Asra is unconscious. Later Balsa brings Asra and Chikisa to Martha's place where Asra finally wakes up.

On the Prince's Trail

The Second Empress secretly sends Jin to ask Balsa to once again protect Chagum after Shuga informs the Master Star Reader that Chagum is still alive. Meanwhile, Chagum is shown to arrive to Tsuram port of Rota. Later, Balsa comes to Tsuram, searching for an expensive necklace that Chagum might have sold, as her only clue. Balsa unexpectedly teams up with Sena, who researches the same stolen good shop as her. They find captain of the pirate ship by which Chagum arrived to Tsuram, who explains that he picked up Chagum while attacking a Rassharou ship-house. Balsa and Sena are joined by Hugo, who explains that Chagum is already held captured at the castle of Suan, the Southern feudal, who want to use Chagum as a trump card to get help from Talsh and take over Rota.

Souls Calling Out to Each Other

Hugo explains that most events went according to his plan, including Chagum jumping into the sea. He wanted to see what Chagum can do if he goes "outside". Soon Balsa and Hugo are attacked by Kashals who track Talsh secret envoys. Hugo's leg is pierced by an arrow, and they both escape in a boat. Hugo advises that Chagum should seek to create an alliance between Rota and Kanbal. Balsa then gives herself in to Kashals, saving Hugo from being captured. Balsa is brought to a Kashal village where she is met by the village chief Ahal. Meanwhile, Kashals use Suan's granddaughter Yurari to help Chagum escape the castle. Shihana picks up Chagum and brings him to Ihan. Ihan says that he can not help New Yogo against Mikado's will. Chagum, accompanied by Shihana departs to Kanbal to try to make an alliance between Kanbal and New Yogo. Balsa meets Ihan and then follows Chagum. Kashal village is attacked by a squad of Talsh killers. Shihana and Chagum rush to the village and are also attacked. Sufar seems to be killed. Finally, Balsa comes to help Chagum and the killers are defeated. Balsa and Chagum depart for Kanbal, while Shihana stays to mourn her fellow Kashals.

Balsa Returns to Her Homeland

November 25, 2017
In Kanbal, after many years, the Mountain King's door has finally opened, signifying the upcoming Ceremony. Meanwhile, while crossing Kanbal border, Balsa and Chagum meet Kahm, who brings them to his father Kaguro's place. Balsa hopes that Kaguro can arrange an audience between Chagum and king Rogsam. Kaguro is Jiguro's older brother. In the past, Kaguro was the last assassin sent by Rogsam, but Jiguro passed his Golden Ring of the King's Spear to Kaguro, instead of killing him (only Balsa knows the truth). While Kaguro is away, Kahm tries to fight Balsa in revenge for his clan's past suffering, also telling that king Rogsam has already made ties with Talsh. Balsa defeats Kahm and escapes with Chagum. Meanwhile, Talsh officially demands the surrender of New Yogo. Tanda get conscripted to the army.

Kanbal's Darkness

This episode describes what happened in Kanbal 29 years before the current events. King Naguru is often sick and Karuna serves him as a doctor. Naguru's younger brother Rogsam hatches a coup, and royal guards are already under his control, while the King's Spears are unaware of the coup. He orders Karuna to poison the king, threatening that Karuna's only daughter Balsa would be killed. Karuna's wife has died, and his sister Yuka often looks after Balsa. Yuka seems to be in love with Karuna's best friend, Jiguro, who is also the strongest King's Spear. Karuna is only able to tell the truth to Jiguro when the king is already dead. Karuna asks Jiguro to protect Balsa. Jiguro also suspects that Rogsam plans to attack the Mountain King during the next Giving Ceremony in order to get his hands on precious Luisha stones. Toto, the Herder People's leader, advises Jiguro that if Jiguro is not present, the Ceremony can not happen. Jiguro takes Balsa with him and escapes to New Yogo. 15 years later, after all the King's Spears are killed, Rogsam sends Kaguro to kill Jiguro.

The Giving of Luisha

Balsa and Chagum come to see Yuka who is now running an infirmary in a remote location of Yonsa clan domain. Soon Yonsa clan elder, Rarug, comes. He was once a King's Spear and is the last living person who have personally been and the Giving Ceremony. He explains that the Ceremony participants have to fight Hyohlu, the Guardians of the Mountain King. The last person standing receives Luisha. The fighting technique to fight extremely strong Hyohlu is called "Spear Dance". Soon Kagura comes to Yuka's infirmary with his soldiers. Rarug helps Chagum to escape and brings him to Toto, while Balsa allows herself to be captured. She demands to meet with Rogsam. Meanwhile, Toto and Chagum discuss the warm water of Nayug that is now overflowing the mountains. Toto surmises that it could cause a disaster. Meanwhile, at the front-line fortification construction site, Tanda meets a strange boy named Kocha, who also can see Nayug and sometimes unwillingly utters some "prophecies" like "this place will soon disappear" that he does not really understand.

Rogsam's Ambition

December 16, 2017
Balsa tells Rogsam that she does not know where Chagum is, but he would come to the royal castle once Rogsam breaks ties with Talsh, and is going to serve as an intermediate for an alliance treaty between Rota and Kanbal. Rogsam doubts that Kagura actually killed Jiguro, but Balsa says that he did. Rogsam arranges a spear fight between himself and Balsa, but Radalle stops them. Balsa is imprisoned. Meanwhile in Talsh capital, Hugo and Talsh general-governor Beris discuss the unrest among the citizen of Talsh vassal states caused by heavy Raul's war fund taxes and recruitment. Hugo asserts that Raul's ambitions are focused on subjugation of other countries due to the fact that he can not become Talsh emperor because he has an older brother, and by changing that the war can be averted. Soon Raul is ordered to personally go to war front lines of the Northern Continent. Meanwhile in New Yogo, the Master Star Reader prepares to kill Mikado in order to prevent war, but in the end he does not have the resolve to do that. Talsh forces burn New Yogo fleet and are about to land. Meanwhile, Rarug explains to Chagum that current ties of Kanbal king with Talsh are mostly due to a huge debt of Kanbal to Rota Southern feudals that is caused by prolonged hiatus in Luisha Giving Ceremonies. They understand that Rogsam is preparing to fight the Mountain king, which could be a disaster. Meanwhile, Rogsam states that he would accept Chagum's plan if Balsa fights a King's Spear as a part of a ceremony. Balsa fights and defeats Kagura, who then gives his golden ring to Balsa and suicides jumping off the balcony. Radalle sees some dark shapeless figure appear behind Balsa. Rarug and Chagum arrive to the palace.

The Spear Dance

December 23, 2017
King Rogsam, Radalle, Chagum, Balsa and other King's Spears, as well as several retainers enter the cave where the Giving Ceremony takes place. Hyohlu defeat every warrior except Balsa. Chagum devises that Hyohlu are the souls of past King's spears touched by the mountain spirit. The last opponent that Balsa must defeat is Jiguro, but she can't fight him. Rogsam charges in, but is quickly defeated. Balsa then fights Jiguro, while exchanging past memories and sorrows with him. Jiguro requests Balsa to come back to Tanda. Jiguro is defeated, but Balsa is also wounded and unconscious. The "Last Door" opens, and Rogsam tries to go past it to attack the Mountain King, but is intercepted by a newly appeared squad of Hyohlu. They are about to finish him but Radalle protects father with his own body, and begs the Mountain King to forgive Rogsam. Rogsam's body is sucked into the Last Door, Balsa and Radalle are healed by spirits. Luisha is obtained. Balsa once again visits Yuka.

War's Parting (or: War-Caused Farewell)

Balsa yields her Golden Ring and the King's Spear position to Kahm. She gives her farewell to Chagum and heads to Tanda's place, only to find out that Tanda went to war. Newly crowned king Radalle agrees to make an alliance with Rota. Chagum, along with 15000 Kanbalese soldiers, goes to Rota. The army that New Yogo assembled in Tarano plains for the first battle is comprised mostly of recruited peasants, including Tanda. It suffers a devastating defeat from Talsh army. When Tanda is on the brink of death, his soul flies to Torogai, and he tells her about Kocha's revelations. Meanwhile, Raul arrives to Tsuram port, where he forces the Southern Feudals to accompany him, along their 12000 troops, instead of helping them to take over the Rota throne as they foolishly expected. Hearing that, king Ihan gives Chagum another 25000 soldiers. Chagum now goes to New Yogo with an army of 40000, while the main Talsh army of 50000, as well as 12000 lead by Raul, make their way to Yazuno fortress. Meanwhile, Balsa does not find Tanda (or his body) at Tarano plains and heads to Shirogai, which is now burnt down by Mikado orders. She meets Shirogai refugees including Asra. Meanwhile Tanda is shown to lay sick in Kocha's family house in Okka village. Tanda is said to have saved Kocha during the battle.

Reunion with the Wounded

January 13, 2018
Talsh soldiers arrive to Okka village. They don't kill anyone and even buy provisions from local residents, however, driving them out of the village to a rocky area nearby, because the village is now used as prince Rauls's HQ. Meanwhile, the Second Queen prevents the Master Star Reader from poisoning the Mikado. Torogai appears before Shuga and Gakai and warns them that the upcoming flood might cause New Yogo to disappear. Talsh main force starts to storm Yazuno fortress. Meanwhile, Balsa leads Shirogai refugees to Kanbal. Midway, she saves a group of Okka residents, Kocha among them, from a robbery attempt. Those people deliver food to sell to Talsh army, Balsa goes with them and finds Tanda. Tanda needs his right leg to be amputated due to abscess. They don't have any weapon to cut off the leg, so Balsa tries to fetch a sword from a Talsh soldier. Fortunately, Hugo appears and prevents a fight. Balsa cuts off Tanda's leg. Meanwhile, wooden Yazuno fortress, which is the last fortification before Kosenkyo, is attacked with fire charges. Chagum's forces arrive.
